Description
Checking on the progress of the baby great horned owls in Melbourne, I found that they had left the “nest.” They were both at the tip top of the big oak tree. This made it difficult to see them clearly, not to mention to photograph them through all the foliage and branches. Nevertheless, I persisted. When a squirrel scurried up close to them, they both became alert. They looked down through all the branches to look at me with those big golden eyes. They had grown quite a lot and were now the size of basketballs. Feathers were much more pronounced. They stretched their wings frequently and combed their new feathers with their beaks. I don't know exactly how old they are but am figuring that they are about five or six weeks old. It looks like they are getting close to flying. I don't know how they got to the top of the tree but assume that it must have been a little bit more than just climbing. Here is one of them looking straight down to me. The sun was getting low in the sky and cast a nice golden glow.

AnnaJo - the way it's looking at you it's as if he's talking down giving you some kind of wisdom. Great shot!
AnnaJo Vahle replied:
Thank you for your visit and comment, Belinda. It was a chick but he was at the top of the tree (of knowledge) on a college campus. He might have been trying to teach me something.

Very nice AnnaJo. I really like this shot of an immature Great Horned Owl. They sure go through a transformation, from the fluffy look to the sleeker adult. Thanks for the good description as well. Voted.
AnnaJo Vahle replied:
Thank you for your visit, comment and vote, Randy. You are right to note that they go through quite a transformation. Amazing that they do it in such a brief time!
