Cocoa Playhouse Study
Cocoa City is in central Florida on the Indian River. As they completed the construction of a new City Hall, they hosted a competition for artwork. They required that all artists be local and complete a small study for them to jury. Once they chose the ten pieces for purchase, the artists were commissioned to paint it on a 24 by 36 inch canvas. All the subjects were to be sights in Cocoa.
Two of my pieces were chosen. This is one of the studies I did. It is of the Aladdin Theater, often called the Cocoa Playhouse. It is in the downtown area, which is called Cocoa Village.
This is a 9 by 12 inch acrylic painting on canvas. I did it en plein air and did a relatively loosely. Although, the weather was actually hot and sunny, I decided to make it a rainy day. I did this for a few reasons. I wanted to feature the pretty new sidewalks and crosswalks. I thought that this would look more interesting if it was wet with rain. I wanted to reflect the building in the road and make the pavement more colorful.
There was a lot of traffic and parked cars. I thought that if I pretended that this was a rainy day...perhaps a Sunday morning; there wouldn't be quite as much traffic. I intended this to be early morning before the businesses opened, so that the Playhouse wouldn't be obscured by the parked or moving vehicles.
None of the figures are anyone in particular. I made them up to fill the scene and make the rainy morning look more plausible. Remember, this is just a study. The final painting is now hanging in the newly built City Hall.
