Description
A watchful mother Sandhill Crane brought her little chick out from hiding in the tall background reeds for a lesson in finding dinner. Painted on a round bevelled edged canvas to represent the circle of life.
I discovered the Viera Wetlands for the first time when I was on a quest to find some sandhill cranes to photograph and paint. When I found it, I was delighted to see that there were several mating pairs. When I first arrived, there were no other people there and I just slung my camera over my shoulder and went for a walk. A big crane actually walked right up to me. He seemed to invite me to join him. I followed his cue and walked along the path with him for a couple hours.
Eventually a pair of cranes flew over us. They loudly called out to my companion. He called back to them. I imagined that he was telling them that it was alright to join us and that the blonde was okay. They generally seem to prefer redheads, I noted.
Anyway, to make a long story shorter, I sorta befriended them. I was allowed right up close to watch them with their little offspring. In this scene, the mother is giving a little grub to the chick. The baby ran around his parents getting little tidbits from them both. They are attentive parents.
