Description
I enjoy painting things up close and personal. But sometimes, I just need to be out in the wide open spaces. We have some of the most interesting and beautiful skies around here. The sky is rarely without clouds. They are constantly moving and changing like a giant lava lamp. As an artist painting en plein air, it generally means that I must pick a moment and try to capture that. The winds and humidity keep everything always in motion. I began this painting from my back yard. I simply painted the sky as the clouds grew and massed. When that was complete, I drove up to North Merritt Island a few miles from my home. With my camera slung over my shoulder, I hiked around the various roads, paths, and along waterways. I strode briskly and stopped frequently to watch various birds, gators, turtles, snakes, and other critters. I seemed to have the area to myself for a change. It used to be that way for me for years. Nowadays, though, I seldom find myself as alone out there as I did a couple days ago. I love it that way the best. Perhaps that makes me selfish but I seem to see so much more when other humans are not around. There weren't many birds. The winter migration has not quite begun yet. I suspect that is why I was allowed so much privacy. The birders don't really like to be out there in the heat. I was mostly after the big sky, so it was just fine with me. I chose to paint this scene from Black Point on the Indian River. This is a seven mile wildlife drive. I took turns driving and hiking. A small island of mangrove trees is in the middle distance. Out of sight to the left is the Kennedy Space Center. The foreground has pretty flowers. They are called fire wheels or Indian Blanket flowers.

Thank you very much, Rosalie. I am sure that you have seen that kind of sky in Cape Coral, too.
