Painting - Acrylic On Denim
Description
I painted this alla prima, which is to say, all at one sitting. It is the Italian way to say that. This was a bit of an experiment. Instead of painting on canvas or board, I painted this on stretched denim. It had a totally different feel to it. As usual, I used acrylic paints. Although, I painted with brushes full of thick paint, it immediately soaked in. It had been primed with a clear primer but apparently not enough. It felt a bit like painting on velvet, I think. I have never painted on velvet, but this seemed to feel like it might actually be. This surface was soft and a bit fuzzy like well worn jeans.
When I paint in watercolors, I save back whites to create various values. In this case, I did it the other way. I saved back the darks. Since the background was a denim blue, it was a strange feeling. I did no prior sketch. I dove in with brushes loaded with paint and went at it. That is one reason the edges might not be exactly perfect.
These are red grapes but as I painted them, I noticed a lot of amber and/or purple. I deliberately chose a bottle of wine with a similar color. I poured some of the wine in a glass and set everything on the table next to my easel. I placed a basket behind the grapes. I painted it rather loosey goosey and let it look more like a trivet I used to have. This is a 16 inch by 20 inch acrylic still-life painting on denim.
