Description
This is my second painting of this hickory tree. I did the first one from the other side. I had to contend with a violent rain storm then. This one, painted a few days ago, was a much easier project. The weather was perfect. The temperature was nearly 90 degrees. The sky was free of threatening clouds. This tree is at Sam's House Nature Sanctuary on North Merritt Island. That is located just a few miles south of the Kennedy Space Center. Fallen leaves and hickory nuts were strewn on the ground at the base of the tree. You can see the big hole in the base of the tree. It reminded me of a key hole from this side of the very old tree. Few people visited the park during the time that I painted there. Like the first time, I painted this tree, squirrels chomped on the hickory nuts on the limbs overhead. It is a strange but comfortable sound to hear. Shavings of nuts floated down gently all around. It looks a bit like snow. Occasionally, a squirrel would scurry by my feet with a hickory nut. They would scamper up the tree trunk and find a limb to begin gnawing away at the soft flesh of the outside of the nuts. One seemed to pose for me on the limb directly in front of me. He seemed unafraid of me as he looked right at me. Of course, I had to include him in this peaceful early fall painting. I painted this on a 16 by 20 inch stretched canvas. I used acrylic paints. This is entirely a plein air painting.
