Description
My son, Marcus, and Franky and I were in his Orlando backyard. Suddenly there was quite a loud ruckus above us. We were beneath a huge old oak tree. Mockingbirds were screeching and flying around in an obvious tizzy. They were angry and/or frightened about something. We didn't see it at first. But then we noticed a beautiful barred owl was sitting on a limb directly over our heads. She seemed unconcerned about the little birds making so many unpleasant noises. She ignored their feeble attempts at getting her to leave. She seemed much more interested in watching us. She stared down at us with big dark eyes. They were memorizing. I grabbed my camera and began to take photos of her. Calmly, she sat and quietly watched as I took several photos of her. The mockingbirds continued there frantic behavior.
We supposed that there was likely a nest nearby. It was fairly dark beneath the heavy canopy of leaves. I was concerned that I would have difficult getting a good picture. I did manage to get some good enough to use as reference for this painting.
We often saw her in that tree or others nearby. I was lucky to get many photos of her over the weeks. We even saw her juvenile owlet a few times. I may do a painting of him in the future.
My son named her Janice. She seemed to have such a wise comfortable personality. I felt a deep sense of calm when looking into her eyes.
I used acrylic paint on a gallery wrapped 20 by 24 inch canvas. The background is several layers of glazes.
