Description
This little sunken sail boat was in the Banana River. I painted it en plein air. I used acrylic paint on a 24 inch square heavy duty gallery wrapped canvas. It was the first of three paintings I did of the same subject. I painted the tide going in and out like a silly fool until I finally stopped at this point.
As I painted it, I sat in what turned out to be an alligator nest on the shore. I didn't realize my danger until the dock master warned me of Big Bertha. He said that she spent a lot of her time inside the boat. He also told me that she was the biggest alligator he had ever seen. After the warning, I did notice that she seemed to cruise around between me and the boat. Strange that I hadn't noticed her before!
I titled it Locked because it is next to the Canaveral Lock. The boat was locked in place for several years before it was finally removed. I was a bit sad to see it taken away. It had become a landmark of sorts for all that time. Although it was a sad sight, it was a pretty one while it was there in the little cove by the Lock.
The Canaveral Lock is the largest navigation lock in Florida. It is located between Port Canaveral's West turning basin and the Banana River. It was constructed by the US Army Corps of Engineers in 1965. It secures safe passage of vessels from the Banana River to Port Canaveral and the Atlantic Ocean. The lock reduces tidal-current velocities in Canaveral Harbor. It prevents entry of hurricane tides into the Banana River and prevents salt water intrusion. This lock was built larger than originally planned to allow passage of the Saturn rocket's first stage, used to put Apollo rockets into space.
