Description
The Lonesome Dove
As I was heading home from a pleasant day of being out in the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge, I noticed something glowing bright orange in the scrub trees. With curiosity, I pulled over to the side of the road. I grabbed my camera and strode over carefully to investigate.
It was a dove. A single dove sitting on a scruffy branch. It seemed to glow so brightly. The sun was setting. I believe that the light of the golden hour enhanced the orange and lavender colors. He didn't make a move. He didn't take alarm with my presence. I stood beneath him and regarded him. He, in turn, regarded me with a quiet calm.
I wondered where his mate was? I rarely see a dove not in a pair or group. I imagined that he might have lost his mate. That notion made me feel a bit sad. Did he feel alone? Did he feel grief? Was he a lonesome dove? I felt a connection with him.
I took a couple of photos of him and began my journey home. The image haunted me for the past couple years. I have always wanted to show how he glowed with a magical beauty. Yes, just a simple ordinary pigeon-like bird that radiated a noble beauty stayed in the back of my mind as a subject that I wanted to paint some time. I finally have painted it on a piece of masonite board with acrylic paints.
If a dove comes into your life, he may be reminding you that in order to soar, you must know when to move your wings and when to allow the wind to take you to new heights. If you were to sit on a branch looking to the sky and hoping the wind will simply pick you up, you would never move. You must surrender and allow the wind support your wings. Get moving and experience the exhilaration of flying higher and higher.
Alternatively the dove could be letting you know that you need to simply stop and take a few deep breaths. Let go of the turmoil that is currently surrounding you and find peace within you. Know that what you see right now is reality shifting in ways you never thought possible and that what you are truly looking for is just around the corner. The most chaos happens just before your dreams come true.
