Description
I found this old retired mailboat in a boat yard in Indiatlantic, Florida. I was told by a worker in the boatyard that it used to be used as a mailboat between Merritt Island, the Florida mainland and the beaches. Merritt Island is between two lagoons, so that the beaches are on one side and the mainland is on the other. This little boat was only twenty feet long. When bridges were built to connect the island, beaches and mainland, there was no need for the boat to be in service anymore.
I asked if I might use the window frames or portholes to frame my artwork and was offered the entire boat. I wasn't allowed to have pieces without taking the whole thing! Since I didn't have any place to store such a boat, I sadly had to refuse.
I did this watercolor sketch of it on location. Over the span of a few months, I did several paintings of it. One time, I went back to do yet another painting of it and found that it was gone. It finally disappeared. I have no idea what happened to it. When I inquired...nobody seemed to know.
