Description
I was recently having coffee in Cocoa Village, Florida, with some friends. One of them had recently bought an old house a few blocks away. He knew that I was interested in plein air painting. He knew that I especially enjoyed painting old historic buildings. Proudly, he invited me to visit his new purchase. While he was showing me around, I noticed the little flag on his front wooden porch. The flag was in a flower pot next to a an old watering can. He noted that it was a 48 star American Flag. I thought that it made a beautiful little still life. Of course, I had my camera with me. Of course, I had to take a photograph of it.
With July 4 coming up in a couple days, I thought that this would be a nice image to post.
Nicknames for the flag include the “Stars and Stripes”, “Old Glory, and “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
According to Wikipedia....The national flag of the United States of America is often referred to as the American flag. It consists of thirteen equal horizontal stripes of red (top and bottom) alternating with white. It has a blue rectangle in the canton (referred to specifically as the “union”). It now bears fifty small, white, five-pointed stars arranged in nine offset horizontal rows of six stars (top and bottom) alternating with rows of five stars. The design of the flag has been modified 26 times officially since 1777. The 48-star flag was in effect for 47 years until the 49-star version became official on July 4, 1959. The 50-star flag was ordered by President Eisenhower on August 21, 1959.
