Description
This is the beginning of a plein air painting. I used acrylics on a 16 by 20 stretched canvas. I sat in the tailgate of my van. The subject is of a burned and abandoned chapel on Merritt Island. It was called the Universal Center and Chapel of Healing. I recently did another plein air painting of the other building of this same Center. They are two buildings connected by a covered walkway. Although the other building was built of stucco, this one seems to have vinyl siding. The roof was caved in. The cross on the roof looked as if it had twisted on it's support. A pair of cardinals watched me for a few minutes. The ever present osprey sounded her alarm frequently from her nest nearby. I painted this as the sun was high and the shadows were short. When I began this painting, the sky was cloudless. However, the clouds bloomed and grew before my eyes. The air grew thick with humidity. I lost the little shade provided by my van's upraised tailgate. The sun was in my eyes and beat down upon me. Sweat rolled into my eyes. The glare made it difficult to see what I was doing. The police stopped by to check on me a couple times. Other strangers came by and commented on my painting. Finally, I gave into the heat and packed it up for the day. I had painted only a couple hours. It began to rain on my brief drive home. I think that I might go back and put in a few more details. I did much more than this photo indicates.

Thank you so much, Kym. I am flattered. It is funny but the cops that spoke to me while I was painting there said the same thing. I guess that is what we do as artist...make them a little more interesting or pleasing to the eye?
