Description
This is a little painting that I did alla prima. It is an acrylic painting on stretched canvas. I did it from memory right after I saw the sight. I had taken an evening bike ride around my neighborhood. I lived along the Potomac River in Dahlgren, Virginia, at the time. The Potomac River is located along the mid-Atlantic coast of the United States and flows into the Chesapeake Bay.
I bundled my toddler into the child seat of my bicycle. It was a bit chilly but not really cold. We each had to wear a jacket against the coolness. We used to take bike rides together most evenings after dinner. It was a pleasant opportunity to get some fresh air and exercise. We loved to spend time together in that fashion...exploring our world around us. We rode along the road beside the river. As the sun set, we stopped and watched the sky. I committed it to memory as best as I could. It was both magnificent and peaceful. It soothed our souls.
Upon my return home, I immediately set my new canvas on my easel and began to paint. It is a relatively simple scene but I wanted to capture the bright orange of the sky. I like the lacy branches of the trees silhouetted against the sky. Marsh grasses were in the foreground. Puddles of water around the grasses reflected the sky and trees.
It was the end of autumn and the leaves had fallen from the trees. Distant trees had an unusual blueish haze, which contrasted against the bright orange. Those distant trees were quite pretty.

Absolutely stunning work AnnaJo! This has a moody feel to it... it seems as if I have been there before. I can almost feel the cool wind redden my face. I love it.
