Description

Nothing much seems to be happening. The birds and other wildlife are quiet. There is just the hint of a breeze in the warm humid air. Clouds billow and mass in a slow constant dance. All is quiet at the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge. All is peaceful.

Three cabbage palms stand in a group together in the sun. It is as if they keep each other company. Small cabbage palms grow in a group near to them. Pretty Indian Blanket flowers grow beneath them all. Not even a butterfly is in sight.

The Indian River winds around through the marshes in the background. I love such days around here. There is a gentle beauty to this part of the world. I have seen this scene millions of times full of wildlife. That usually is the case in the mornings and in the evenings. This is especially true of the winter. During the winter, birds flock to this spot visiting from the north. During that time, it is impossible not to see wildlife in any direction you chance to look.

I briefly painted a river otter taking a dust bath in the road. I decided that it took away from the quiet. It was the quiet that I wanted to be the star in this 24 by 30 inch gallery wrapped linen canvas. When the otter was in the scene, it became about the cute little critter. I decided that the otter might be the star of another painting. I didn't want it to be about this one. I painted it back out. This painting is all about the quiet summer afternoon. It is a beautiful place to breathe in the serenity.
