Red and White Knit
This is a portion of an afghan that my mother made for me. She did it for me just before she died of cancer. I was taking care of her at the time. She wanted to give me something personal as a gift. I use it all the time. She knitted it with giant knitting needles. She always intended to teach me how to do it. Unfortunately, we never got around to it. She made one in different colors for each of my sons and my brothers. It was one of the few things that she could do while she was in bed. I would prop her up with a bunch of pillows. It pleased her to do it.
She was taught to knit when she was a little girl in Denmark. She said that it was a part of her education there. She used to knit all kinds of picturesque scenes on sweater, hats, and scarves. She was very good at it.
Even though I live in Florida, where knitted garments aren't especially useful, I still appreciate the work and the artistry of them. She knitted from time to time all my life.
Garter stitch, is also known as the knit stitch. This is the most basic form of welting. In the round, garter stitch is produced by knitting and purling alternate rows. By contrast, in the flat, garter stitch is produced by knitting every stitch or by purling every stitch. In garter stitch fabrics, the purl rows stat out from the knit rows. This provides the basis for shadow knitting. Garter stitch fabric has significant lengthwise elasticity and little tendency to curl, due to the symmetry of its faces.
This simple image might make a good background for other kinds of art.

It is so beautiful, AnnaJo. My wife knits and crochets, so I can appreciate the love that went into creating it.
