Description
A good friend of mine, took me to see the mute swans on Murrell Road in Viera, Florida. It was part of celebrating my birthday. They were still building the nest when we first observed them. About three weeks later, the eggs hatched. Six cygnets quickly took to the water as a crowd of onlookers, including myself, eagerly watched. They seemed surprising large and agile, each slightly different in coloration. The parents majestically brought them close to all of us as if they were proudly showing them off.
It all seemed as if it was one of those good omens in my life. My long terrible siege of a multiple sclerosis flareup has been incredibly difficult. Just after the swans hatched, I finally began medication. It had been quite difficult to get treatment. It isn't a cure. It continues to be a bumpy ride, but I am generally feeling improved. My doctors have warned me to avoid stress. This was such a peaceful scene of family harmony that it soothed me tremendously.
The family only stayed at their nest for a few days. They moved down the road to a bigger lake.
The mute swan is one of the heaviest flying birds. The male is known as a cob and averages about 24 to 26 pounds. Young birds, called cygnets, are not the bright white of mature adults. The down may range from pure white to grey to buff. All mute swans are white a maturity, though the feathers (particularly on the head and neck) are often stained orange-brown by iron and tannins in the water.
Mute swans nest on large mounds that they build with waterside vegetation in shallow water on islands in the middle or at the very edge of a lake. They are monogamous and often reuse the same nest each year. Male and females share the care of the nest.
The familiar pose with neck curved back and wings half raised, known as busking, is a threat display.
The mute swan was introduced to North America in the late 19th century.
This is a 30 by 40 inch heavy duty gallery wrapped acrylic painting on canvas. I used photographs that I took of the occasion as reference.
