Description
I began this painting in acrylic on stretched canvas. Towards the end of it, I changed to oil.
Actually, I used water miscible oils for the final layer.
At one of my favorite places, the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge, I watched this lively tricolored heron running around through the shallow water catching fish. It was a bright sunny morning and he seemed to be full of joy as he pranced, danced and bounced around chasing his prey. This typical fishing technique is used by many wading birds, and seems to be very effective. I was intrigued by the many colors reflecting through and on the relatively smooth water. One could see the bottom of the lake and it seemed to cause some interesting color patterns, a bit psychedelic. Of course, the splash was a pretty sight. I came up with the name of splash fishing because it sounded a bit like bass fishing and it just sounded too perfect for the title. The tricolored heron is the only wading bird with dark upperparts and a white belly. Young birds have a rusty neck. I began this painting in acrylic and finished it in oil.
