Description
When I lived in Italy as a young woman, I loved to visit, Venice. It has some of the most beautiful artwork in the world. I loved the quiet of the city without automobile traffic. There is something relaxing about it all. Of course, I had to take gondola rides from time to time.
This is an oil painting that I did of one of my rides. It is on a 20 by 24 inch canvass.
According to Wikipedia...The gondola is a traditional, flat-bottomed Venetian rowing boat. It is well suited to the conditions of the Venetian lagoon. The gondola is propelled like punting, accept an oar is used instead of a pole. For centuries gondolas were the chief means of transportation and most common watercraft within Venice. It is driven by a gondolier. In modern times the iconic boats still have a role in public transport in the city. They serve as traghetti (ferries) over the Grand Canal. They are also used in special regattas (rowing races) held amongst the gondoliers. Their primary role today, however, is to carry tourists on rides at fixed rates.
The oar or remo is held in an oar lock known as a forcola. The forcola is a complicated shape. It allows several positions of the oar for slow forward rowing, powerful forward rowing, turning, slowing down, rowing backwards, and stopping. The ornament on the front of the boat is called the reffo. It means Iron. However, it can be made from brass, stainless steel, or aluminum. It serves as decoration and as counterweight for the gondolier standing near the stern.
