When my first son, Marcus, was born, I switched mediums for painting. I used to do mostly oils. Now that I had an active little boy, I didn't want to have a bunch of wet paintings around. Nor did I want to be concerned about toxic materials and ingredients such as turpentine and oil paints. This was my first serious attempt at using acrylic. I found it to be a different way of painting. I found that the way acrylic paints dry darker than when they are wet to be a bit daunting. I liked the way that it dried so quickly a nice attribute. I had always worked in layers. It just went much faster with acrylics. I used a palette knife for the textures on the wall.
Marcus was only a few months old when I did this portrait. It was the first of many that I have done all his life. He quickly became used to the fact that he was my favorite subject. I have lost track of all the many paintings I have done of him. Of course, I thought him to be the prettiest baby in the world.

Although born in upstate New York, I grew up mostly in Nevada and California. The fabulous panoramic views of the far west inspired me to begin painting and photographing it’s beauty. I’ve lived in various areas in the states and in Europe but always had the desire to express through painting and photography. While living in the Mediterranean, I was especially influenced by the great Renaissance art and the chiaroscuro work of Caravaggio. I began with oils, worked with a wide variety of mediums but now mostly work in acrylic, oils, and photography. I studied mostly engineering in college but ended up with a degree in Technical Illustration, one in Psychology after several moves and colleges, one in Art Education. My experience as a...
