Perched Hawk
Occassionally, I hear the raucous noise of all the neighborhood birds screeching and calling out in alarm. I usually find this red shouldered hawk is around. She often perches on my backyard fence or in the trees. I think that this is a female because it is relatively large for a red shouldered hawk. She silently flies within the canopy of the oak trees in my yard and the ones around me. She seems to be after the young of the neighborhood blue birds, mockingbirds and wrens. I have even seen her catch the occassional frog, lizard, or snake around the roots of my banana trees.
Sometimes she allows me to get right up close and personal to her as I photograph her. Othertimes, she takes flight and won't let me close. I based this painting on one of those times when she let me get close.
This is an acrylic painting on a 16 inch by 20 inch board.

I began with oils, worked with a wide variety of mediums but now mostly work in acrylic, oils, and photography. I studied mostly engineering in college but ended up with a degree in Technical Illustration, one in Psychology after several moves and colleges, one in Art Education. My experience as a...
