This is the second of my squirrel series. It was another rainy day in paradise. My plans to paint in plein air were thwarted. My cat was watching something outside the window.
It was a squirrel, digging up acorns beneath the oak tree in the front yard. Using some purple paint, I lightly sketched the scene. The canvas was coated with a clear primer. It was actually close to the color of the squirrel, coincidentally!
I had to use several coats of paint to cover the gray to indicate the mostly green background. I used the view from my window to guide me but I didn't go for all the details. I played with the colors and suggested the ground and totally ignored the sidewalk and street. I caught the light coming through the clouds at one point and exaggerated it a tad. As she gnawed, she dribbled crumbs. Some of them clung to her white apron of fur. It seemed that I ought to offer her a bib!

Although born in upstate New York, I grew up mostly in Nevada and California. The fabulous panoramic views of the far west inspired me to begin painting and photographing it’s beauty. I’ve lived in various areas in the states and in Europe but always had the desire to express through painting and photography. While living in the Mediterranean, I was especially influenced by the great Renaissance art and the chiaroscuro work of Caravaggio. I began with oils, worked with a wide variety of mediums but now mostly work in acrylic, oils, and photography. I studied mostly engineering in college but ended up with a degree in Technical Illustration, one in Psychology after several moves and colleges, one in Art Education. My experience as a...

Hey, I missed this new one too! You are really paying homage to these little fellers! I like how white you painted his stomach.. Nice violet tones in that fur! I'm glad you are starting a SERIES.. I think that is great. I never realized that I would start a SERIES, with Raccoonies ,and Squirrels.. these photos are like a soap opera of animals.. Fun! FV.. thanks for stopping by my place and giving my Douglas Squirrel a vote. Douglas Squirrels are named after the same guy as the Douglas Fir Tree is named after.. Anyways.. small like a Chipmunk! FV..
AnnaJo Vahle replied:
Thank you Kym. It is fun working on these little critters, isn't it? You have a wonderful series. Interesting to learn such trivia as them being named after the same guy who's name is synonymous with the fir tree. I am a sucker for such information. Thanks for your support and encouragement, too.
