Description
While traveling through the back water towns of the Appalachians, we saw several produce stands selling pumpkins, gourds, squash and corn. It was the month of October. We were fascinated to see all kinds in a variety of shapes and sizes.
I endeavored to do a painting for the season. I referred to several of the photographs that I had taken. I enjoyed the challenge of trying to assemble a pleasing composition. Depicting the textures were a nice little challenge. I asked the various vendors about the different types of produce. Unfortunately, my memory isn't what it once was and I have forgotten. However, I have looked on the internet and found this pertinent information about gourds. I, also, found out a little bit about corn.
Names differ throughout the world, but in the United States, any round, orange squash used for pies or jack-o-lanterns is likely to be called a pumpkin. But the term “pumpkin” really has no botanical meaning, as they are actually all squash. Squash are divided into two categories: tender or summer squash, and hard-skinned or winter squash. Examples of summer squash include zucchini, pattypan, straightneck, crookneck and other types. Winter squash include small to medium hard-skinned squash such as the acorn, small Hubbard, miniature pumpkin and spaghetti types, as well as the large hard-skinned types, including banana, butternuts, cheese pumpkins, cushaws, and large hubbards, among others.
Generally speaking, since all grains and cereals could technically be classified as vegetables, most experts further separate grains and cereals, like corn. Similar to many other fruits and vegetables, such as cucumbers, tomatoes, and avocados. The classification of corn can change depending on how they are served.
So it may be simply said that corn can be either of the three, among a fruit, vegetable, or grain. This may be decided on the basis of how it is used, whether on the cob, or as popcorn, or cornstarch.
