Description
This cute pair of baby great horned owls is in an oak tree. They stayed cuddled together the entire time that I observed them. As best as I can judge, they are less than three weeks old. They are at a school in Melbourne, Florida. The parents were observed building the nest during the Christmas holidays.
Great horned owls are adaptable and may be found near civilization in lands extensively modified by man. The great horned may occupy woodlots, parks or suburbs, where it takes rodents and prey as large as skunks and other owls. It often hunts from a perch but also course and is active at dusk, dawn, as well as at night.
The great horned owls is massive, much bulkier than the long-eared owl, with which it may be confused. The horns, or ears, are father apart on the great horned owl, which has a white throat lacking in the long eared.
