Description
My son's girlfriend lost her father this year. She asked me to paint this portrait of her parents. She gave it, in turn, to her mother as a Christmas gift.
Their long marriage is a wonderful love story. Bonnie and Ray met when they were young teenagers. Bonnie and her family lived in Canada. They visited Florida every year. Ray and his family lived in Florida in the Miami area. They met and fell in love right away. Over the years, the families became good friends. When Ray joined the United States military, they were married. Earlier this year I took them on a drive through Patrick Air Force Base, where they were married.
When Ray was discharged from his military service because of his diabetes, they moved to Canada. They lived there many years. They had two children, a son and a daughter. When their children were teenagers, the family moved here to Merritt Island, Florida.
Ray continued to battle his diabetes. Unfortunately, he was also diagnosed with short-term memory loss. It was so significant that he couldn't remember anything for more than a moment. Never-the-less, he was a friendly happy man. Everyone that met him, liked him. I certainly did.
He often forgot to take his insulin. He was hospitalized frequently. A few months ago, my son checked on him and found him in a diabetic coma. An ambulance was called, of course. Sadly, this was the beginning of the end. He died a few weeks later.
