Description
It was another beautiful day here on Merritt Island. I had a relatively free day. I went back to Sams House Nature Center. I had done a painting of an oak tree covered with vines the week before. This time, I sat beneath another old oak tree. It was even more massive and older. It was quite lop-sided. The limbs were so large that it seemed to have tipped the tree over a bit. This meant that one side of it had a dense canopy while the other side was more sparse. Rain threatened. The clouds were growing dark. Nevertheless, I spread out a blanket in the shade beneath the leafy side of the tree. I didn't want to miss the opportunity to paint even if it might be for a brief time.
As I began to paint, a family walking among the nearby trees, took turns watching me and posing for me on the huge limbs. Since I was just beginning to block the tree in, I didn't have a chance to include all the people, who had posed for me prematurely. After they wandered off, I began to paint in earnest. I noticed that the largest limb was as if it had been braided. It had a windy texture. I wonder if it had once been a host to a vine, too. Perhaps, the vine had died and/or been removed? Might this cause the strange winding appearance? As the sun crossed the sky, the light constantly shifted lighting various parts of the tree and causing shadows. That confused me a little at first, when I was trying to define that huge twisty limb. I didn't realize what it was actually shaped like until the light moved.
I didn't notice the rain until someone came out to ask me if I didn't want to get out of it! The leaves above me were so dense that I only heard a gentle noise and never felt any of the rain. It was a good shadey cover. I wondered about all the people and animals that must have sheltered there over the centuries. It has been established to be at least three hundred years old.

Another wonderful image. I love the colors in this piece. I'm exploring a similar concept but I can in no way accomplish anything close to your pace and ease and talent. Yet your artwork and style and that you accomplish such an expressive element using acrylics is motivating and inspiring. Fv
