Description
We were in Winter Park, Florida, awaiting the arrival of the train. Some friends were returning from a vacation. We were there to pick them up. The train was running about an hour late from it's planned schedule. While awaiting the train, we did a bit of window shopping. It is a beautiful charming neighborhood with little shops and restaurants. We sat down at one of the little tables outside a little pastry shop. We enjoyed a cup of coffee and a delicious piece of cake. As we continued our trek along Park Avenue, we saw this sight. A man was texting on his cell phone while he was having his boots shined. Both of the men looked up and smiled at us. I told them that I was an artist. I asked them if they minded if I photographed them. I told them that I might use the photographs to aide me in doing a painting.
They both seemed pleased with the idea. They happily posed for me. I took several shots from different angles and distances. The shoe shiner gave me his business card and suggested that I title the painting after him. This is what I have done.
I changed the background a little bit. I played up the colors and exaggerated many of them. In some ways, I simplified the buildings and windows. I wanted the viewer to look at the men rather than at the many details of the relatively ornate buildings around them. I was fairly faithful with their outfits. I moved a few of the foreground details to enhance the composition.
We recently visited him to present him with a poster featuring this painting for him to use for advertising himself. He was delighted I am happy to note.
This is an acrylic painting on a gallery wrapped 30 inch by 40 inch stretched canvas.
