Description
This is the second painting of this pretty little building in Melbourne, Florida. It is across the street from St. Catherine's Greek Church. Like the previous one, this is an acrylic on a 16” by 20” gallery wrapped canvas.
Instead of painting this from the directly in front of the building, this view is a ¾ vantage point. I liked the fact that this looked more like the chapel looked when it was originally built. This side hadn't been changed. The windows are arched and edged in bricks. Bougainvillea flowers are part of the landscaping around the chapel. It adds a nice splash of pink color that I enjoyed taking advantage of and using through out the color composition. The palm trees are pretty much as I saw them. Bushes and scrub palm surrounded the exterior. A little rain threatened but never really materialized. This was indicated by the growing darkening clouds. I like the little bit of drama this added to the sky. Once again, I left out the handicap ramps that were in front of the front door. I went ahead and indicated part of the current name above the main door. It is in the process of becoming an antique store.
The owner took us inside and showed us the fabulous interior. It was full of all kinds of interesting things he and his wife had collected from around the world. He explained that it used to be a private chapel. When the current owners bought this little chapel, they were asked to keep the building pretty much as it was originally for the most part.
It had a metal plaque-sign next to the front door. It said, “Chapel of St. Panteleimon, built for the glory of God by Peter Karas and Family 1992.” The stucco facade has been painted a faux wood slat finish. It has a fairly large blue dome in the middle between two turret-like elements. Three Greek crosses were on the roof tops and dome.
