Description
I did a small series of watercolor paintings of this beautiful Coconut palm. One of them was used for the poster of The Fruit and Spice Park in Homestead Florida.
My brother grew this on his tropical tree farm next to the Everglades National Park. It was amazing to see how full of coconuts, it was! He eventually sold it to some lucky person. I wanted to keep this fairly simple in composition. I could have easily gotten lost in the painting of all the pretty trees surrounding it and in the background. This is a full size sheet of heavy watercolor paper. It is 22 inches by 30 inches. It would make a nice decorative element in any home.
When about 4-6 years of age, during spring the Coconut Palm starts producing sweet-scented yellow flowers. Flowers grow in clusters and are held by slightly branched stalks. Male and female flowers grow on the same inflorescence. They are generally protandrous, male flowers release pollen before females become receptive.
Flowers are followed by fruits called coconuts. Coconut is one of the most recognizable and most useful fruits in the world. They range in color from green, to yellow, or bronze-gold, to brown depending on maturity and variety. Fruits are oval, 3-angled, 12 inches long and 10 inches wide, with single seed inside. There is a nut inside of the fruit, filled with a layer of white coconut meat and sweet watery milk. The Coconut Palm seeds are one of the largest of any plant. After maturing it takes a full year for the coconut to ripen.
Fruits start developing when plant is around 6-10 years old. Coconut Palm bares fruits all year long with an annual production around 50-200 coconuts per palm tree, depending on growing conditions and palm variety.

Wonderful watercolor and the decision to isolate this amazingly fruitful palm against a plain background was a good one. I am enjoying exploring its many shapes, lines, and textures.

Palms are fascinating. There was an episode on Dirty Jobs about pollinating Date Palms. Raising Coconut Palms seems harder even though both male and female are on the same tree.

Thank you very much Bill. It was a bit of an experiment keeping it so loose and open.
