Description
Dinner Time is a round bevelled edged gallery wrapped painting. This is the second painting I did en plein air of the same scene. The first one is called, “Homestead Farm.” That is a rectangular painting. Loving the scene and watching it change as I painted it, I believed it to be worthy of another painting. Wanting to make it different, I did it round.
I didn't have an easel with me the first time I went out there to paint, so my brother found an old table on the premises. Funny thing to note, was that it, too, was round. We laid it on it's side to prop up my canvas. So...as I painted, I had to be careful not only of the canvas rolling away, I was careful to keep the table (easel) from rolling. This was particularly important because palm trees, my primary subjects grow pretty much straight up. I had to be careful to keep it all properly verically aligned. I kicked myself mentally a few times as I struggled with this and wondered why I made things more difficult for myself.
Since this was a pretty complicated scene, I worked on it over the course of many days. Usually, because of wind, rain, and other weather issues, I didn't have more than an hour or two at a time to paint. Often times, a storm would whip up briefly and I would grab all my painting gear and hide in the car out of the rain. This is by the Florida Everglades and the storms usually passed quickly. When the rain cleared, I would, if I could, resume work painting.
I sat beneath a mango tree for shade and a little protection from the elements. It didn't protect me from the big nasty deer flies, which loved to chomp on me. Nor did it protect me from the mosquitoes, who seemed to likewise relish me. Some ibis and egrets joined me as I painted. One of them struck a funny pose, standing up on the berm and snaking his neck around to feed in the water below.
I named this painting, "Dinner Time," because that was the time of day that I painted this. It, also, is depicting the birds eating dinner. The dinner plate shape of the canvas added to the idea.
I painted this as I cared for my mother. She, sometimes, sat beside me and watched me paint. This was a peaceful and emotionally soothing thing for both of us.
