Description
Some of my paintings are hanging in the Blue Heron Restaurant and Art Gallery to the left of this building. This building is called Plantation Manor. It is in The Great Outdoors RV & Golf Resort just west of Titusville, Florida.
There are many communities in Florida where the residents use golf carts to get around in their community. I like the idea of showing the lifestyle of such a community. The grounds are neatly manicurred. I noticed one day that it was Election Day. People were arriving in their golf carts to do their duty. I indicated three people going up the steps. I based this painting on several different photographs that I have taken over the years.
While deciding how to compose this painting, I tried to play with the standard rules of composition. I usually keep in mind, the golden ratio. However, I noticed that this building was already designed using the Golden Mean or Ratio. I thought that featuring it dead center that, perhaps, I could piggy-back the proportions of the building to my painting.
Keeping in mind that we, in the U.S.A., generally read from left to right, I tried to make the left side just a little more attention-grabbing. This would cause one to read the painting from left to right and keep coming back. I hoped that by adding enough details and interest through the scene that the viewer would explore the painting before they came back to the left. That is why I put the sign on the left. It was actually on the right but I want the view to keep returning to it to read the painting.
While the proportion known as the Golden Mean has always existed in mathematics and in the physical universe, it is unknown exactly when it was first discovered and applied by mankind. It is reasonable to assume that it has perhaps been discovered and rediscovered throughout history, which explains why it goes under several names.
Putting it as simply as we can (eek!), the Golden Ratio (also known as the Golden Section, Golden Mean, Divine Proportion or Greek letter Phi) exists when a line is divided into two parts and the longer part (a) divided by the smaller part (b) is equal to the sum of (a) + (b) divided by (a), which both equal 1.618.
