Description
I have been painting at the Enchanted Forest for about twenty years, even before it was developed as a sanctuary. In fact, I was there painting in plein air on opening day. Yes, politicians, reporters, and other visitors watched as I painted. It was fun with all the live music and festivities around me.
This is one of the many trails at the Enchanted Forest Santuary. This particular scene is on the Ridge Trail. This is an Oak scrub habitat. There are five basic habitat types in the Enchanted Forest Santuary: oak scrub, mesic and hydric hammock, basin swamp, and scrubby flatwood. Wildlife species found here include the Eastern indigo snake, Florida scrub lizard, gopher tortoise, white-tailed deer, and bobcat.
I included a little gray squirrel in this painting. You can see him on the left center part of the path. He is looking through the leaf litter for some tasty morsels. Most likely, he is looking for some acorns. At the foot of the oak trees, are scrub palms and young cabbage palms. There is also a wonderful wealth of plant life in the Santuary. Both temperate and subtropical species grow here together.
The Enchanted Forest Santuary was the first property purchased by the Environmentally Endangered Lands (EEL) Program. It is the EEL Program's “flagship” sanctuary. The 472-acre Forest is part of a sanctuary network the EEL Program is establishing throughout Brevard County. The Forest is located in the southern limits of the City of Titusville. It is east of Orlando and just about three of four miles from the Kennedy Space Center.
I believe this is a perfectly named magical place.
