Description
I just signed this painting today. I had a bad cold and spent the day relaxing and painting this for the most part yesterday. It is a tree that has several special meanings for me. My father, brother, and nephew all bear the name, Royal. Another of my brothers, Squire, is a tree farmer in South Florida. He loves this tree and often took me around various places to see and photograph them in South Florida. My Jim loves this tree and has taken me various places around central Florida to do the same. He even collected and brought seeds from Ascension Island in the South Pacific, where he worked many years ago. After ten years, he finally planted them this summer. He had ten seeds and they all sprouted! He is taking care of the little trees in hopes of planting them some day in our new home.
The royal poinciana is most commonly propagated by seeds. Seeds are collected, soaked in warm water for at least 24 hours, and planted in warm, moist soil in a semi-shaded, sheltered position. In lieu of soaking, the seeds can also be 'nicked' or 'pinched' (with a small scissors or nail clipper) and planted immediately. These two methods allow moisture to penetrate the tough outer casing, stimulating germination. The seedlings grow rapidly and can reach 30 cm in a few weeks under ideal conditions.
Delonix regia is a species of flowering plant in the bean family. It is noted for its fern-like leaves and flamboyant display of flowers. In many tropical parts of the world it is grown as an ornamental tree. In English, it is given the name, Royal Poinciana or Flamboyant. It is also one of several trees known as “flame tree.”
I sorted reached into my mind to create this painting. The background is based on an area in Melbourne, Florida, where we have seen many beautiful Royal Poinciana trees. I just made this composition up from my imagination. I started out with a deep blue sky knowing that it would help to set off the deep reds of the flowers. As the painting progressed, I realized that the sky was too vivid and kept lightening it with clouds.
This is a 16” by 20” acrylic painting on canvas. I used several layers of paint to create various effects.
