Description
I bought a kit for growing oyster mushrooms. As you can see, they are particularly beautiful. These are about five days old.
Knowledgable mushroom lovers all over the world wait until the fall of the year to persue the robust oyster mushrooms that grow on trees in the wild. Shortly after the first rains of the season, the snow-gray petal-like beginnings of P. ostreatus can be found. The autumn forest is brightend with the delicate young, translucent, eccentrically stemmed caps cascading shelflike from the surface of dead hardwood trees. The cap is scallop shaped and has a delicate aniselike aroma not usually found in oyster mushrooms grown on artificial material.
Cultivated oyster mushrooms are not only weet tasting but versatile. They can be used as a subtle flavoring agent in many ways.
A spectrum of colored Peurotus has appeared I the marketplace. Gray, blue, yellow, pink, and white caps will please the eye as well as the palate. Especially delicious is the dark-capped P. sajor-caju. It blends well in a variety of dishes. The stems are tender and tasty.
The most recently introduced cultivated Peurotus is outstanding: it has delicate daffodil0yellow flowerlike caps with pure white stems and grows in large clumps. One such group could be used as a centerpiece for a dinner table. The almost fruity aroma reminds one of certain zinfandel red wines. This sweet quality is not lost in cooking.

Hi AnnaJo. I voted for your image in the recent Sepia Contest (it should have placed in my not-so-humble opinion! Anyway, I wrote down the title (thank goodness) while I congratulated the others and when I went back your image was gone. But I found you. What an image. How fun and dark and mysterious and magical all at the same time! You go girl! Best, Marie
