Description
This is a little oil painting that I did in plein air many years ago. I did it while I was living in the Bay area of San Francisco, California. The foothills are usually this color. I loved the way the dark olive colored oak trees looked against the hills. The hills, themselves, usually only turn green for a brief while in the spring. They took on a different, albeit, brief kind of beauty then.
I loved to explore and hike through the hills. The air was usually fairly dry and breezy. The sky was clear and cloudless, as usual, too. It used to seem to me that every step brought a different view. It is such a simple subject but it was one that I truly loved.
I carried my old-fashioned wooden paint box with the easel within the lid. It was a heavy load when filled with my oil paints, brushes, palette knife, pallet, medium and turpentine. I had to stop to catch my breath and rest my arms from time to time as I hiked through the hills.
I sat down on the dry grass out in the open. It seemed as if I was far away from civilization. I was far away from all the problems of my life. It was a peaceful quiet day. It was perfect for painting out in the open air. Since it was a fairly small canvas, it didn't take very long to paint.
When I look at this painting, I am reminded of so much. Most especially, I remember that wonderful day that I had when I painted this. I miss those hills.

My eye just kept coming back to this one .. ; I think it's because they find these rolling hills comforting & these wonderful colours soothing :)))
