Description
Marcus was not quitet a couple years old when I did this painting of him. We were living along the Patomac River in Virginia. He loved to play out on the front porch and watch all the squirrels in the trees. We had a big yard full of trees and the various critters living in and around them.
Another of his favorites, besides the squirrels, were the woodpeckers. They conveniently built a nest not two feet from the back door. As he played in his sandbox, he would often just sit and attentively watch the woodpeckers, squirrels or other birds. Deer occassionally wandered into the yard and kept him company. It really was a lovely place for a little boy to grow up.
Each morning as his father drove off to work, Marcus would run out to the front porch to wave Good-by. I loved to see him with his beloved blanket, which he carried everywhere. He called it his lellow. It was a yellow blanket. He couldn't quite wrap his tongue around that word.
He had a habit of walking on the heal of one of his slippers. That seemed to be a part of his personality. Funny how people develop comfortable habits even at such a young age?

What a precious moment in time you have portrayed in this painting of your son. I am left to imagine that Marcus likely cultivated a love for nature which he will always have....what a magical place in which to be a child, surrounded by the peace of nearby animals and birds. like/f
AnnaJo Vahle replied:
Thank you, Anne. You are quite right about Marcus loving nature. He often goes for long hikes and bike rides out in nature.
