Description
I backed my van among the trees at Sams House Nature Center. I set up my easel and ignored the threatening thunder deeply rumbling. The sky was gray. My subject was an ancient hickory tree. It was gnarled and had a big hollow hole at it's base.
When I first began, I heard the crunching and munching of squirrel all around me. They were eating hickory nuts and doing it loudly. Little pieces of hickory nut shaving kept drifting around me from the trees above. It almost looked like snow. I included one of the squirrels in the painting.
Eventually, the rain let loose. I was in the zone and didn't want to stop. I kept painting. Squirrels scurried past me and hid in the hole of the tree. There must be a tunnel within because they seemed to disappear. Even a big old gopher turtle walked briskly by. I added him to the painting.
As the rain turned into a torrent, the water washed over the tree in sheets. It fell in tiny water falls from the shelf-like part above the hole. It was all very beautiful. I hoped that the storm would be brief. It wasn't. I kept retreating further and further within my van but the water was spraying everywhere. It melted and washed away my freshly applied strokes of paint. I finally had to accept that I had to stop painting.
