Description
I painted this in plein air at my mother and brother's tree farm. It is located right next to the Everglades. It was a difficult time in my life. I was caring for my mother, who was dying of breast cancer. This painting took a few days to do. My mother sat next to me and kept me company a couple of afternoons as I painted her beloved tropical tree farm. She loved it out there and enjoyed watching me paint. My brother, also kept me company. He was partners in owning the tree farm at the time. He loved working out there and caring for all the trees. As I painted, he often tidied and pulled down the old fronds from the various palm trees. I had to ask him not to keep changing the scene that I was painting. I liked the old fronds and didn't want it all to be too neat and tidy!! Harrumph!!!
Mom has since died and my brother now owns the farm by himself. I was recently there visiting with him and remembering all the various spots I had painted. I am planning to go back again soon and do some more plein air paintings.
Painting there was therapeutic for me as it was quite an emotional toll caring for my mother. I loved her very much and still miss her. I am glad to remember that she was pleased with this painting.
While painting there, I saw quite a bit of wildlife from various birds, insects, and mammals. The deer flies took great nasty bites out of me. Mosquitoes wined in my ears, sometimes putting me on edge. The rain came and went causing the furrows between the trees to fill with mud and water. I often had to race into my car out of the rain and wait awhile to resume my painting.
I sat beneath a mango tree while I painted this scene. It gave be pretty good shade from the hot sun. I did a second painting of the exact same scene but on a round canvas. I painted that on location, too. The trees had grown and the weather was a little different when I painted that one.
I included some great white egrets flying through the trees just as I had seen them many times. My brother told me that I painted 27 different kinds of palm trees in this particular painting! He grew many varieties. His favorite one are called Royal Palms. A coconut palm is in the center of this particular composition.
This painting is full of wonderful memories.
