Description
Jim Creek Lift Off
While driving around Tosahatchee Wildlife Management Area, we saw so many beautiful sights and animals. We saw a turkey with some babies crossing Powerline Road ahead of us. Unfortunately, I didn't get my camera focused on the birds before they disappeared among the bushes lining the swamp near Jim Creek. We went back looking for the turkies but didn't have any luck. We did see a few great white egrets fishing in the various swamps, creeks, and on the St. John's River. The great egret, also known as the common egret, large egret or great white heron, is a large, widely distributed egret. I painted this one as it lifted up into the air.
With its location on the St. Johns River and the variety of wetlands Tosohatchee offers outstanding wildlife viewing opportunities. The unpaved Power Line Road that runs east and west, ending at the St. Johns River. This raised roadbed passes through sand cordgrass marshes and provides excellent views. Vultures perch on the powerline stanchions, while herons, egrets, ibises, limpkins and wood storks regularly congregate in ditches and wetlands. Raptors such as bald eagles, ospreys, red-shouldered hawks, owls and kestrels, nest and hunt here. Rails, ducks and purple gallinules frequent the marsh surrounding the St. Johns River. Miles of rustic trails offer good opportunities to spot migratory songbirds. White-tailed deer and wild turkey in woodland edges or clearings. Swallow-tailed kites are often spotted in flight over open areas in spring and summer. Autumn and spring blooms in wetlands and roadside ditches attract numerous species of butterflies.
Tosohatchee Wildlife Management Area (WMA) covers 30,701 acres along 19 miles of the St. Johns River in eastern Orange County. Meandering creeks, lush cabbage palm hammocks, slash pine flatwoods, cypress swamps, and freshwater marshes form an integral part of the 3600-square-mile St. Johns River watershed. These habitats, and those of adjacent public lands, are essential to clean and store the water supplying the St. John's River.
An abundance of birds, both resident and migratory, and wildlife such as white-tailed deer, bobcat, fox squirrel, alligators, and otters flourish here. Bromeliads and orchids festoon tree trunks and limbs, ferns carpet the hammocks, and wildflowers such as spring blooming irises add swaths of color to the landscape. The rare hand fern finds protection here, as does another botanical treasure - cutthroat grass. Tucked in along a portion of James Creek Swamp is a pocket of old-growth cypress trees that escaped extensive logging activities during the last century.
This is a 30 inch by 40 inch acrylic painting on gallery wrapped canvas.
