Description
This is an interesting little building in Melbourne, Florida. It is across the street from St. Catherine's Greek Church. We drive by it fairly often and noticed that it seemed to be getting a face-lift. We stopped by and took a closer look. It was down a fairly long driveway and surrounded by plenty of trees.
We parked our vehicle directly in front. I set up my French easel and put out my paints and brushes. I began to quickly paint a loose rendition of it using acrylic paints on a 16 inch by 20 inch gallery wrapped canvas. After about an hour, a man drove up and parked near us. He asked if we had permission to be there. I blushed and admitted that we had not. He introduced himself as the owner and gave us permission.
He took us inside and showed us the fabulous interior. It was full of all kinds of interesting things he had collected from around the world. He explained that it used to be a private chapel. He and his wife recently acquired it and were fixing it up with the intention of it being an Antique Store. It was all both beautiful and fascinating to explore.
It had a metal plaque-sign next to the front door. It said, “Chapel of St. Panteleimon, built for the glory of God by Peter Karas and Family 1992.” The stucco facade had been painted a faux wood slat finish. It has a fairly large blue dome in the middle between two turret-like elements. Three Greek crosses were on the roof tops and dome. Above the big dark heavy wooden front door was a stained glass window in an arch shape. It reflected the sky. It was actually a blue sky but I added some drama by creating a sunset sky.
There was a large white wooden ramp at the front for handicap access. I didn't include this in the painting. I left that out and adjusted some of the surrounding foliage to suit my fancy. I played with the colors a bit not sticking to reality.
