Description
We visited this beautifully kept lighthouse a couple of different times this year. I based this painting our first visit. When we arrived, it began to seriously storm. The wind was strong and the rain was heavy. We drove around it, trying to see it from every side. We drove across downed power lines a couple of time. They were lying across the road. Policemen stopped us from crossing them on our third effort. Lightning danced in the cloudy darkened sky while thunder boomed all around us. I indicated the lightning in my painting. When the rain finally began to lighten a bit, we saw a man scurry out of his car to take a quick photo of the beautiful red edifice. He can be seen in the middle of the scene. I, also, painted Jim standing in the doorway of his vehicle getting his camera ready to use.
Reflections of the red lighthouse and red brick buildings can be seen in the wet paved parking lot. It was all quite dramatic and beautiful. We didn't stay long in the rain, before we took shelter in the nearby art museum.
This is the first painting I've done of the Ponce De Leon Inlet Lighthouse. It was fun to indicate the stormy weather.
In 1970, the Coast Guard abandoned the old Light Station and established a new light at the Coast Guard Station on the south side of the Inlet. Vandals did much damage to the Light Station, but two years later as the result of work by concerned citizens, the abandoned property was deeded to the Town of Ponce Inlet.
In 1972, the Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse Preservation Association was founded as a non-profit, organization to restore and operate the property as a museum. In 1972, the Light Station was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as one of only a handful of 19th Century Light Stations to have all its original buildings still intact.
Through the efforts of the dedicated volunteers of the Preservation Association, the damage done by vandals
was reversed and full restoration was begun. In 1982, a new tower balcony replaced the crumbling one, and the light in the lantern was restored to active service. The three keepers' dwellings now house exhibits on many aspects of lighthouse history. In 1998 the Light Station was designated a National Historic Landmark.

What an amazing backstory to this painting, AnnaJo. The eeriely golden light casting bright glints on brick, leafing and the drenched pavement is in stark contrast to the still advancing thunderheads and lightning strikes…WOW!…best to you!
