Artist's Description
In October of 2012, Hurricane Sandy pounded Cape Canaveral Beach. I went to the beach a few hours after it left our beach and it headed north. The surf was still a bit rough and the beach looked rough, too. The sea grapes, sea oats and grasses were strewn all over the beach in a haphazard fashion. A ruddy turnstone shore bird scurried through the foam. The sea foam clung to his feet. It looked like he was wearing snow shoes. I watched as he clumsily plodded over the beach. Other people walked along the beach to see the results of the storm. I indicated the gray day with the weak sunlight just beginning to glow at the horizon. Foam was piled up all along the shore. It looked as if the beach needed to be cleaned. The tide was still very high. Quite a bit of sand was washed away during the storm.
It feels as if I have had such a storm raging through me for many months as I battle with my Multiple Sclerosis. I won't go into all the symptoms but it has been incredibly diffi...
About AnnaJo Vahle
Although born in upstate New York, I grew up mostly in Nevada and California. The fabulous panoramic views of the far west inspired me to begin painting and photographing it’s beauty. I’ve lived in various areas in the states and in Europe but always had the desire to express through painting and photography. While living in the Mediterranean, I was especially influenced by the great Renaissance art and the chiaroscuro work of Caravaggio. I began with oils, worked with a wide variety of mediums but now mostly work in acrylic, oils, and photography. I studied mostly engineering in college but ended up with a degree in Technical Illustration, one in Psychology after several moves and colleges, one in Art Education. My experience as a...

A lovely painting. Though it shows a tossed beach, it conveys a sense of quiet.
AnnaJo Vahle replied:
Thank you, Elizabeth. It felt oddly quiet, too.
Bonnie Marie
Wow! I love it so ethereal! I know it was after a bad storm but it makes me think of the song that goes after the storm there's a golden sky and the sweet silver song of the lark! So beautiful! I have seen the beach at Del Mar Ca. look like you described after a vicious storm but the painting is the peace after the storm!
AnnaJo Vahle replied:
Thank you so much, Bonnie. Yes....I grew up in California and remember seeing the beach after a storm. It is much the same.

Dear AnnaJo, beautiful painting...backstory...survivorship is often hidden in the minds and bodies of those who bear inner scars of many varieties...behind their masks. You are one of the courageous alchemists who transmutes pain into BEAUTY. LF...
