Description
This is my third painting of the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse. This is an acrylic painting on a 24 inch by 36 inch gallery wrapped stretched canvas. I based this on the view from Cape Canaveral Beach. We are looking north towards the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, where the lighthouse is. The sky is backlit by the setting sun behind a mass of clouds. Small sand dunes with sea grass is in the foreground. The light from the sky is reflected in the surf. The light from the lighthouse is not much more than a speck in the distance.
Ponce de Leon described this area as the Cabo de las Correntes or Cape of the Currents. This area was a navigational landmark long before it had a name. The Ais were the first indians that Ponce de Leon encountered in 1513. That is when he tried to land at St. Lucie Inlet. Fierce and respected, the Ais fought off Spanish explorers. They used their cane arrows to do this. This is the root of another name endowed by the Spanish. Cabo de Canaveral or Cape of Canes was the name, which has endured. From the age of exploration until now, this landmass has been an important crossroad in man's inherent need to push the limits of his world.
The Cape Canaveral lighthouse was erected to warn mariners of the outlying shoals off its coast. Broken ground and shoals extend 13 nautical miles northward and northeastward of the lighthouse. They terminate in the Hetzel and Ohio shoals. Which have a depth of 11 feet and 19 feet respectively. In a heavy sea, these shoals are marked by breakers, but with smooth seas, there is nothing to indicate their locality. The land is usually not visible from off these outer shoals.
The lighthouse is open to public visitors as a part of the Air Force Space and Missile Museum public tour. However, visitors can only climb to the fifth floor of the lighthouse. The remaining floors have been deemed as a safety liability by the Air Force and requires special access to ascend.
The Cape Canaveral Lighthouse Foundation and volunteers are instrumental in the restoration projects and in interpreting the lighthouse history. Future plans of the foundation includes the restoration of the three keeper's cottages for multipurpose use.
Not only, is the lighthouse a beacon for mariners, I thought of the symbolism for someone, who is suffering. The light on the horizon is indicative of hope and light at the end of suffering.
