Description
This gallery wrapped acrylic painting is based on a scene I have often seen in the area. Sometimes I see as many as ten or twenty turtles together on a log or a rock in the water here in Central Florida. I believe that these particular ones are Eastern Painted Turtles. They are water turtles. They can grow up to nine inches long. They are black with smooth, flattened shells.
The top part of a turtle's shell is called a carapace. The carapace has many small plates called scutes. The Eastern Painted Turtles has thick lines between its scutes. This turtles also has red markings around the edges of its carapace. The bottom part of the turtle's shell is called the plastron. The plastron of the Eastern Painted Turtles is yellow. These turtles also have yellow and red stripes on their necks, legs, and tails.
Eastern Painted Turtles live in marshes, lakes, ponds, rivers, and slow-moving streams. They prefer water with lots of plants, and logs they can climb out on.
These turtles bask in large groups. Basking is when the turtles leave the water to soak up sunlight. This helps them warm up, since they are cold-blooded, and gets rid of parasites, such as leeches, which don't like the sun. If any of the turtles sense danger, they will quickly dive into the water.
For this reason, it is pretty difficult for me to observe them for more than a moment. Even from a long distance away, they slip quickly into the water before I can usually get a decent photograph. I based this painting on a photograph that I took at the Viera Wetlands in Central Florida near Melbourne. These turtles are basking on an old water logged palm tree log. There were many more turtles on the long when I put the camera to my eye but only three left by the time I could snap a photograph.
