Description
As you can see from the photo, I was painting in plein air. I have discribed a bit about it when I posted the painting. It is called, “The Wake.” I used my favorite medium, these days. It is acrylic on canvas. The stretched canvas is 16 inches by 20 inches. It is a bit difficult to see exactly the scene as I saw it from this particular shot but it does show enough for one to get the idea, I think.
I sat in the tailgate of my van to paint this. I took this photograph from the same position. I struggled a bit with the sun. Although, I had shade at first; of course, it moved. That meant that I kept turning the easel and canvas from one angle to another to mitigate the effect of the sun's glare.
An osprey shrieked it's piercingly high call almost the entire time that I was there. I painted for about three hours. The osprey seemed to be trying to warn all the many vultures to keep their distance from it's nest. Even though I was parked in a vacant parking lot, off the main road, and well hidden from passersby; I had visitors. A workman came by to bring a dumpster. I asked if it was allowable for me to paint, on what I knew to be private property. He thought that it was probably alright. About twenty minutes later, a couple of policemen stopped by. I asked them the same question. They warned me to be careful, since the place had been burned down deliberately. They said that questionable people were often present there. After about twenty minutes, I had another visitor. He seemed to know already that I was there and didn't mind. He, too, warned me to keep an eye out for dangerous people. I believe that he was the owner.
I painted until a motorcyclist rode up and went down by the river behind the church. The light was getting tricky and I was getting hungry. I was, also, tired of listening to the osprey shrieking incessantly. Perhaps, he quieted once I had left?
