Description
Perched Hawk
Occassionally, I hear the raucous noise of all the neighborhood birds screeching and calling out in alarm. I usually find this red shouldered hawk is around. She often perches on my backyard fence or in the trees. I think that this is a female because it is relatively large for a red shouldered hawk. She silently flies within the canopy of the oak trees in my yard and the ones around me. She seems to be after the young of the neighborhood blue birds, mockingbirds and wrens. I have even seen her catch the occassional frog, lizard, or snake around the roots of my banana trees.
Sometimes she allows me to get right up close and personal to her as I photograph her. Othertimes, she takes flight and won't let me close. I based this painting on one of those times when she let me get close.
This is an acrylic painting on a 16 inch by 20 inch board.
According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Red-shouldered Hawks are medium-sized, with broad, rounded wings and medium-length tails that they fan out when soaring. In flight, they often glide or soar with their wingtips pushed slightly forward, imparting a distinctive, “reaching” posture.
Whether wheeling over a swamp forest or whistling plaintively from a riverine park, a Red-shouldered Hawk is typically a sign of tall woods and water. It’s one of our most distinctively marked common hawks, with barred reddish-peachy underparts and a strongly banded tail. In flight, translucent crescents near the wingtips help to identify the species at a distance. These forest hawks hunt prey ranging from mice to frogs and snakes.
Red-shouldered Hawks soar over forests or perch on tree branches or utility wires. Its rising, whistle kee-rah is a distinctive sound of the forest. They hunt small mammals, amphibians, and reptiles either from perches or while flying.
Look for Red-shouldered Hawks in deciduous woodlands, often near rivers and swamps. They build stick nests in a main crotch of a large tree. During migration, Red-shouldered Hawks often move high overhead along ridges or along the coast.
