Description
This is based on a scene that I saw at the McKee Botanical Garden in Vero Beach, Florida. I had read an article claiming that this was one of the most peaceful places in the U.S. Since it was just a little way from where I live in Florida, we cruised down to check it out. We were delighted to walk all the beautiful tranquil paths featuring lily ponds and water-falls.
It reminded me of some paintings done by the famous Claude Monet. He completed about 250 paintings of his water lily garden in Northern France. His most valuable work sold for $80.4 million at a London auction in 2008.
Ann Dumas was a co-curator of a Monet water lilies paintings exhibition in Cleveland, Ohio and London, U.K.. She claimed that, Monet's impressive water garden depicted in the images was not welcomed by his neighbors in 1893.
There was a protest from local farmers who were very suspicious of these strange aquatic plants that Monet wanted to plant because they believed that they would poison their water and kill their cattle.
As well as becoming one of the most iconic names in the art world, Monet was an avid gardener. The impressionist wanted to divert the river Epte into his property in Giverny, France, to create the soon-to-be-famous water garden.
But fearing the effect the water lilies might have on their livestock, the farmers wrote to local officials in 1893 in an attempt to block his plans.
Monet only gained permission to proceed "after a lot of difficulty," Dumas said, according to the BBC.
Water lilies are a well studied clade of plants because their large flowers with multiple unspecialized parts were initially considered to represent the floral pattern of the earliest flowering plants. Later genetic studies confirmed their evolutionary position as basal angiosperms.
Water lilies do not have surface leaves in the winter time, and therefore the gases in the rhizome lacunae access equilibrium with the gases of the sediment water. The leftover of internal pressure is embodied by the constant streams of bubbles that outbreak when rising leaves are ruptured in the spring. I liked the effect and was happy to include all the bubbles.
Before there was Disney, there was McKee Jungle Garden in Vero Beach. This was a magical roadside attraction featuring exotic tropical flowers and animals that drew 100,000 visitors a year in the 1940's.
Today, only a corner of the once large garden has been saved. And while June is a steamy time to visit the gardens, that is when water lilies bloom. The garden has one of the largest outdoor collections of water lilies in the UnitedStates.
This is an acrylic painting on a 16 inch by 20 inch stretched canvas.
