Please Poke Eyes
I had breakfast recently with a friend out at Port Canaveral, Florida. We watched quite a vast variety of ships and boats in the harbor. We saw seagulls and pelicans all around the docks and in the sky. Of course, we had seafood omelets, since we were at the port.
On our way out of the restaurant, I wanted to photograph some of the life and scenes around there. So many possible subjects to paint! However, I was puzzled by this scene. I laughed at the weird idea of signs telling people to poke eyes!
Nobody seemed to know why this needed to be done. When I got home, I googled it. I found out that the eyes of an eviscerated fish could fill with gas. When this happened, the fish carcasses floated. This caused them to become toxic. Pelicans and other creatures might eat them and become poisoned. This is, of course, undesirable.
I would imagine, that this might look unappealing, too. Maybe they would stink? In any case, it is recommended to poke the eyes of a fish after cleaning it and before throwing it back into the water.
I found it even funnier when I noticed the accompanying sign. It said to not solicit, chop, or clean the carcasses. I originally thought that it meant to not try to sell anything to the fish. My mind just kinda went a little wonky, I guess.

Very interesting to a (somewhat) non- fisherperson! Good to know! There is nothing worse than exploding fish! (When I was a kid, my mom took us to La Jolla beach! I loved the beach and brought all kind of seashells HOME in my SUITCASE! Ick! You can imagine what my suitcase smelled like with dying clams, etc. when I got home and opened up my suitcase!).

Wow this is very interesting AnnaJo!!! I read your description, and that cleared it up for me!!! Lol I clean my fish when I get home!!!

Hhahah...yes, it is all kind of weird, isn't it, Marvin. I guess if you clean them at home, it doesn't matter if your poke the eyes?

That is funny... so no chopping the fish or cleaning them, but you can poke their eyes LOL. Reading further though on your description, I can see the purpose - for the sake bird health :/ :D

Thanks, Anita. It does seem odd to see such signs, especially next to each other. It causes one to wonder, doesn't it? ;-)
