I did this abstract acylic painting a few years ago. I was playing with various effects. This is a 30 inch by 24 inch heavy duty gallery wrapped canvas. I love trees and I thought to try and do an abstract for a change. This is not my usual style. I was thinking of old oak trees. I tried to create the effect of a dream. I wanted some things to be in focus and some ellments to be a little dreamy. I used opaque and transparent colors. Painting knives and brushes were used. I wanted to express trees that are both visible and out of sight. Tree roots are usually underground out of sight. This aspect intrigues me. When we look at a tree, we don't usually see all of it. To me, there is a bit of mystery to them. The roots are a necessary foundation and yet not often seen. Both the top branches and the roots of a tree are necessary to t...
Although born in upstate New York, I grew up mostly in Nevada and California. The fabulous panoramic views of the far west inspired me to begin painting and photographing it’s beauty. I’ve lived in various areas in the states and in Europe but always had the desire to express through painting and photography. While living in the Mediterranean, I was especially influenced by the great Renaissance art and the chiaroscuro work of Caravaggio. I began with oils, worked with a wide variety of mediums but now mostly work in acrylic, oils, and photography. I studied mostly engineering in college but ended up with a degree in Technical Illustration, one in Psychology after several moves and colleges, one in Art Education. My experience as a...

AnnaJo , thank you so much for your entries and CONTEST BLOG DISCUSSION participation…a must view in the contest discussion tab by fellow artist-viewers! Your Imitationalism penchant is evidenced in much of your portfolio; however, these Formalist entries are equally masterful. Genius! ANNAJO, THANK YOU, Thank you, thankyou For entering four of my FAVS, ...each for different reasons: this beauty takes me back to the energetic FLOW from trees...forest...I have always needed to touch them and thank them for their essentiality to all of LIFE on planet earth! Were it not for trees, we would not have oxygen to breathe! Their root networks are FINALLY being seen as what they are...advanced internet systems for matriarchal communities that interrelate with the mycelia for our very sustenance yet we slaughter them indiscriminately. I love how you represent them...thank you annajo
AnnaJo Vahle replied:
Thank you so much, Laure. I understand what you mean about all the roots being part of a big network. I was thinking something very much the same when I created this painting. It is a delight to know that you understand.
