Description
I just signed this painting yesterday. I had a nasty persistent cold. Sometimes when I am not well, all I want to do is relax quietly and paint. It is therapeutic for me in every sense of the word. I based this painting on a photograph that I took. Of course, I embellished things a little here and there but the driftwood was there as was this shrub tree. I am not sure of the species.
We recently went to Ponce de Leon Inlet to see the lighthouse. I did a couple paintings of the lighthouse but this scene is across the inlet from the lighthouse without the lighthouse in view. I thought the shrub tree was pretty enough to be the subject for this painting. The first painting I did of this area was like the first day that we were there in the middle of a nasty lightning storm. The second one is of our second visit during a hot summer day when we looked at the lighthouse from the beach at Smyrna Dunes Park. This is on the east coast of Florida and a little south of Daytona Beach.
We hiked along the two-mile boardwalk in the hot sun. We were over-heated and fatigued by the time that we got to the water to see the lighthouse across the inlet. Lighthouse Point Park is at the southern tip of Ponce Inlet. The natural beauty of the undisturbed land has been preserved for all to enjoy. Dolphins frequent the shoreline, gopher tortoises can be found in sandy areas, and other wildlife (including raccoons, possums, skunks, armadillos, shore birds and birds of prey) can be observed.
The Inlet giving the lighthouse its name honors Juan Ponce de Leon, the Spanish explorer. It is he who name the state La Florida, the land of the flowers, during his alleged search for the Fountain of Youth. Historians are often not certain which places Ponce de Leon, DeSota, and other Spanish explorers landed and visited. This is true for the Inlet bearing Ponce de Leon's name.

The lighting on this tree's branches as they splay across the entire canvas makes this an extraordinary painting, Smyrna! It's wonderful. like/f
