Description
This is a collaboration between my mother and me. I designed and drew the full-sized cartoon. My mother was just learning to do tile mosaics. I had recently moved to Merritt Island, home of Kennedy Space Center. I was working as a drafter and technical illustrator for the space program. When my mother learned that I was having a pool built in the backyard, she offered to make a mosaic for it.
My mother is from Denmark, the land of Hans Christian Andersen and the Little Mermaid. My family and I visited our relatives in Denmark when I was young. I was enchanted with the statue of the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen. Since I had long strawberry blonde hair and used to be a lifeguard in California, Mom thought that she would make the mermaid resemble me.
She tried to match my coloring. She added details such as the heart shaped tile for my heart. I live in the Sunshine State, so she indicated the sun in the sky. She managed to find a tile that resembled a rocket. She placed that on the left side of the sky. We have watched rocket and Space Shuttle launches many times from the pool and our backyard. Mom had difficulty managing to create my hands and just filled it in with cement. She labored long on this project. Unfortunately, she didn't finish it before my pool was completed. Therefore, I have it attached to my house on the deck next to the pool. She had originally intended it to be installed in the bottom of the pool.
I am rather pleased to have it more easily seen on the outside, anyway. I look at look at it every morning when I sit by my pool and have my coffee. It reminds me of happy times.

Wow! This is beautiful. I love the heart tiles and the bright red one for your heart. I can imagine how striking this must be in person!

This is an exquisitely, subtly colored magical mosaic. It conjures up the equally beautiful mosaics of ancient Rome or the beauty of the Minoan Empire.

Thank you, Hartmut. Having lived in the Mediterranean for several years and seeing many of the mosaics you referred to, I am especially honored by your comment. Thank you.
